Inflation in Supermarkets: Food Prices Rise

A significant increase in inflation in supermarkets was recorded in August, according to a survey by IELKA. Food prices, especially meat, poultry, and fish, are on the rise.

Specifically, inflation in supermarkets increased by 1.59% year-on-year in August, according to the Institute of Retail Consumer Goods Research (IELKA). Inflationary pressures in the first eight months of 2025 reached 1.27%.

Price increases in fresh meat reach 11.31%, followed by biscuits, chocolates, and confectionery at 9.02%. The increases in meat are related to international prices and animal diseases.

Conversely, price reductions are observed in detergents (-6.26%) and grocery foods (-5.83%), due to the decrease in the price of olive oil.

IELKA estimates that prices are being contained in large food stores due to economies of scale and private label products. The impact of offers and discounts is also significant.
