Slovakia: How it Became a Car Manufacturing Hub

Slovakia has emerged as a significant automotive manufacturing hub, producing nearly one million cars annually. This makes it the number one car producer per capita globally.
Investments and Factories
Kia's factory in Žilina, with an investment of €2.5 billion, is one of the largest. In addition to Kia, Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Jaguar Land Rover also have factories in Slovakia. Volvo plans to open an electric car factory in 2027.
Workforce and Wages
The average salary at the Kia factory is €2,400 per month, higher than the average salary in Slovakia (€1,403 in 2023) but lower than the EU average (€3,417). Almost all employees are Slovak, with a few Koreans in senior positions.
Historical Overview
Before 1989, cars manufactured in Slovakia were of low quality. After the Velvet Revolution, Volkswagen invested in Skoda in 1991, and other foreign manufacturers followed.
Advantages
Peter Prokop, an automotive industry expert, mentions that low labor costs (60% of wages in the West) and high productivity are significant advantages. Slovakia is located in the heart of Europe, with good connections to major markets.
Incentives and Education
The Slovak government offers incentives to automotive companies, such as tax credits. At the Technical School of Žilina and the University of Žilina, there are programs that connect education with work in the automotive industry.
