Cyprus Electricity Authority Unions Warn of Water Shortages and Blackouts
Share on:

Unions at the Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK) are warning of potential water shortages and blackouts due to problems in the energy sector. Marios Pappoutis, President of SEPAHK, stated that the bill regarding Cyta's activity in the energy sector has exacerbated the problems at AHK.

Dimitris Konstantinou, Secretary of SIIDYKEK-AHK, stated that if measures are not taken immediately, Cyprus will face serious problems with water and electricity supply.

The unions EPOPAI, SIIDYKEK, SEPAHK, and SYVAIK are informing staff about issues related to production, units, and the replacement of outdated units in Dhekelia. The replacement process began in 2022-2023 but is delayed due to various bodies, such as the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce, and the RAEK.

Another issue is AHK's penetration into renewable energy sources, where the unions argue that AHK was prevented from investing in its own parks. Concerns are also being raised about desalination and the lack of state support for AHK.

The unions consider the bill for Cyta's penetration into the energy sector to be incomprehensible, questioning what Cyta can offer that AHK cannot.
