The Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) of the European Union in Brussels discussed issues related to the energy transition in fisheries and aquaculture, as well as the future of European agriculture and rural communities.

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panagiotou, stressed that the Cypriot Presidency seeks coordinated European action for a united and resilient Union.

The energy transition in fisheries and aquaculture was discussed, with priority given to ensuring producers' incomes and the sustainability of coastal communities. Rising energy costs and geopolitical pressures make the energy transition more urgent.

The activation of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) is expected to support the sector against rising fuel prices. Ministers examined the Roadmap for the energy transition, highlighting the need to simplify rules and boost investment.

An exchange of views also took place on the future of the European agri-food sector, with emphasis on ensuring fair incomes for farmers and strengthening food security.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christoph Hansen, stressed that the EU agri-food sector is based on strong and fair international trade.
