Halloumi Exports Assured, Production Concerns Amidst Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak

The Cheesemakers Association reassures about halloumi exports but expresses concerns about production due to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Michalis Koullouros, representative of the Association, told ΚΥΠΕ that the situation is manageable if the spread of the disease is contained.
There is no embargo issue for halloumi exports, nor concerns about the consumption of dairy products, as halloumi is sterilized due to the second boiling process. Exports to Australia continue as normal with an additional certificate.
The number of animal deaths and the risk of the virus spreading throughout Cyprus, leading to milk loss and affecting halloumi production, are causes for concern. 80% of the milk in Cyprus is used for halloumi production.
Mr. Koullouros emphasized that it is premature to determine a specific number of deaths that would signal danger. He also mentioned that the timing is negative, as milk production is usually increased during this period.
There has been no discussion about re-examining the timetable for implementing the quota for the PDO. The priority is to limit the spread of the virus and support farmers with compensation and support measures.
