Zambartas: Compensation for Wine Grapes Insufficient After Fire
Share on:

Markos Zambartas, a member of the Cyprus Wine Producers Association, stated that compensation for wine grapes is insufficient following the Limassol fire. The Department of Agriculture is initiating a process to record and assess the damages.

The Association will consider conducting a separate assessment of the damage to vineyard crops. Savvas Hatzimichail explained that compensation covers grapes, not the processed product, wine.

Zambartas emphasized that grape production is lost for this year and likely to be limited next year as well. Wineries may underperform, but there is the possibility of utilizing grapes from other regions. Specialized wines from specific areas will be more affected.

Some vine roots have dried out, while others were affected peripherally. The increase in soil temperature resulted in the loss of microorganisms necessary for viticulture.

At Zambartas Winery, some vineyards were affected, while the winery was saved thanks to the staff. Zambartas mentioned the absence of the Fire Department.
