24-Hour Taxi Strike in Cyprus Over Illegal Operations

The Pancyprian Urban Taxi Federation is staging a 24-hour strike starting at 6 AM, serving only emergency medical cases. The Federation's president, Dinos Constantinou, stated that taxi drivers are protesting against illegal operations by private vehicles used by various platforms.

Mr. Constantinou denounced the violation of legislation and demanded a permanent supervisor from the Department of Road Transport and increased policing. He claimed that some drivers working with private vehicles have lost their professional licenses due to serious offenses. Following a work stoppage in Larnaca last Tuesday, no action has been taken by the responsible authorities, and he warned of an indefinite strike from January 27 if there is no response.

The president of the Licensing Authority, Despoina Americanou, rejected the Federation's claims, stating that 329 complaints about illegal taxis were made in 2025, 123 of which concerned Larnaca. She also pointed out that the Department of Road Transport is conducting inspections and that the Authority is proceeding with amendments to the legislation to control taxi platforms.
