Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Investigation into Feed from Occupied Territories

Authorities are investigating whether the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at a livestock farm in Livadia is linked to animal feed from the occupied territories. Christodoulos Pipis, Director of Veterinary Services, stated that animal feed is a significant means of spreading pathogens.
Commenting on a report in the newspaper “Phileleftheros”, Mr. Pipis emphasized that the possibility of illegal movement of hay from the occupied territories is being examined. The culling of the 260 animals will commence after arrangements for carcass disposal are finalized. The animals will either be incinerated or buried in designated areas.
The farm owner will be compensated provided they comply with EU regulations. Vaccinations will be carried out depending on the spread of the pathogen. Mr. Pipis reassured the public, emphasizing that there is no cause for public health concern, and urged farmers to act responsibly.
