Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Allegations of Inhumane Animal Slaughter

Reactions have been sparked regarding the methods of slaughtering animals infected with foot-and-mouth disease. According to Omega sources, mass culling has been temporarily halted, while the resupply of the appropriate euthanasia drug is pending.

The Cyprus Hunters Movement published a video showing the slaughter of sheep and goats without adequate anesthesia. Nikolas Prodromou, President of Active Citizens – KEKK, denounced that employees of the Veterinary Services are amused by the agony of the animals.

Livestock farmers reported that the slaughter of healthy animals is not done by injection. A meeting of those affected was held with the President of the Republic (PtD), with the General Secretary of EKA, Panikos Hambas, stating that they are on the right track. Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, stated that the PtD will contact the President of the EU to find a solution.

Measures were decided to accelerate vaccinations, strengthen the staff of veterinary services, and establish a committee to manage issues of income loss. The Legal Service will examine the legal aspect of the measures. A new meeting is expected next Friday.
