Alas, if we cut off our own roots...

During a summer gathering of friends, the issue of refugees and its impact was discussed, prompted by the anniversaries of the Turkish invasion and the events in Deryneia in 1996.
The discussion focused on the recognition of refugee identity in future generations, even if there has been no resolution to the Cyprus issue. One of the participants emphasized the importance of knowing one's origin and roots, regardless of age or experience of the place of origin.
It was pointed out that refugees and their descendants have a right to their properties, from which they were forcibly expelled 51 years ago. At the same time, the emotional aspect of identity was highlighted, emphasizing that knowing one's roots is important, even if the place of origin has not been experienced.
"Alas, if we cut off our own roots..." was the characteristic phrase that concluded the discussion.
