Vineyards can act as natural firebreaks, according to statements by the community leader of Kyperounta, Michalis Chatzimichail. The "Chartzi" area between Kyperounta and Chandria, with the Troodos forests bordering agricultural land, is a characteristic example.

As reported, on July 23 in the semi-mountainous Limassol, the fire stopped in front of vineyards. Agronomist Giorgos Karaiskakis explained that, apart from the high percentage of moisture in the crops, the absence of grass and dried branches in the vineyards limits the spread of fire.

A visit was also made to Spilia, an area affected by fire in 2016. The community leader of Spilia, Miltiadis Iereidis, noted the abandonment of agricultural land, which is now a source of danger. There is a decrease in the percentage of farmers, resulting in the land turning into a "jungle."

The government has allocated one million euros for cleaning areas, an amount that is considered small. Michalis Chatzimichail stressed that over 80% of agricultural land has been abandoned. Giorgos Karaiskakis suggested more subsidies for young farmers.

The state is called upon to examine the issue of abandoned agricultural land, as its cultivation will contribute to the local economy and the reduction of forest fires.
