Uproar in EOAs Regarding Dangerous Buildings
Share on:

Intense activity prevails in the District Self-Government Organizations (EOAs) following the tragedy in Germasogeia, concerning dangerous buildings. The EOAs, which assumed responsibility for managing dangerous buildings in April 2025, are called upon to conduct inspections and markings.

ETEK (Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber) has set criteria for inspections and requests updating of lists and posting on the electronic platform. The Minister of Interior had urged the EOAs to conduct new inspections and remove the danger, while ETEK offered an electronic platform for recording dangerous buildings.

Following the tragedy, the EOAs have intensified inspections, classifying several buildings as dangerous, which raises questions about the criteria and adequacy of the inspections. ETEK has proposed the creation of a secondary body to confirm the decisions of the EOAs.

ETEK has provided specific criteria and procedures for inspections, and believes that time should be used to pass legislation on the management of dangerous buildings. The president of ETEK, Konstantinos Konstanti, stressed the need for immediate adoption of changes to the legislation.
