Farmer Reacts After Foot-and-Mouth Disease Detected in Yeri

Tensions are high in the livestock community after a case of foot-and-mouth disease was detected on a farm in Yeri. The 22-year-old owner of the farm, who was arrested last week for obstructing inspections, has taken legal action.
Awaiting the culling of 725 sheep and goats, the owner, through his lawyer, is challenging the sampling process and awaiting clarification from the Veterinary Services. At the same time, allegations of illegal animal movements are being investigated, causing confusion and anxiety among farmers.
In total, cases have been identified in 45 units in Nicosia and Larnaca, resulting in the culling of thousands of animals. Conflicting information from the authorities has created a communications chaos, leaving farmers feeling insecure.
The Government Spokesperson claimed ignorance of the animal movements, stressing the need for strict adherence to European Union protocols.
