Controversy over Grigoriou's Role in Limassol Fires

A heated debate erupted in Parliament regarding the role of the Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, during the recent fires in the semi-mountainous Limassol area. Initially, Fire Chief Nikos Logginos was presented as the coordinator, but he later stated that he assumed responsibility retroactively.
Andreas Grigoriou, who was absent in Australia during the fires, argued that his role is not operational. However, members of Parliament presented the 2023 Council of Ministers decision, which states that the Director-General also has operational responsibilities, such as mobilizing aircraft and deploying forces.
The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, stated that Mr. Grigoriou had expressed interest in traveling to Australia but did not clarify who gave permission for the trip. Mr. Grigoriou stated that he went on his own decision, causing reactions from the deputies. Ms. Panagiotou argued that the role of the D.G. is coordinating regarding the preparation, and not operational during the fires, which also caused reactions.
Members of Parliament spoke of possible criminal responsibilities of the Minister and for misleading the Parliament. The issue remains open, with questions about Mr. Grigoriou's absence and the allocation of responsibilities during the fires.
