Turkish Cypriot journalist Canan Onurer has reported receiving death threats after refusing to retract a report concerning criminal activity by individuals who arrived from Turkey in the occupied territories. Journalistic unions have voiced strong opposition.

According to reports, Canan Onurer, Digital Publications Coordinator of "Kıbrıs Postası," received a message threatening her life if she did not remove the news story. The threat is linked to a report about the arrest and deportation of individuals who committed alcohol thefts in occupied Nicosia in February. The journalist reported the incident to the "police."

The Turkish Cypriot Press Workers' Union (Basın-Sen) has declared its support for Canan Onurer and all press workers, emphasizing that "no threat will prevent journalists from doing their duty." The union will monitor the case.

The statement mentions that increasing crime in the occupied territories threatens social peace and denounces attempts to silence and censor journalists through threats related to crimes committed by individuals entering with tourist visas.
