Veteran journalist Babis Rakis passes away

Veteran journalist Babis Rakis has passed away at the age of 93, after a career spanning decades in Cyprus and Australia.
In a statement, the Cyprus Journalists Union (ESK) said that Babis Rakis was one of the first members of the newspaper "Haravgi" and a collaborator of RIK. He also collaborated with the newspapers "Neolaia" and "Ergatiko Vima" and the magazine "Nea Epochi".
Babis Rakis emigrated to Australia in 1975 and worked for the Greek community newspaper "O Ellinikos Kirykas" in Sydney. In 1983 he joined the Australian state radio station S.B.S., where he worked as editor-presenter until his retirement. In recent years he resided in Pervolia, Larnaca.
In addition to journalism, Babis Rakis was involved in prose writing, publishing two collections of short stories and the novel "The Smyrnia of the Camp" in 2018.
His funeral will take place in Australia, where his family lives.
The Board of Directors of ESK expressed its condolences to the family of Babis Rakis.
