Court Rejects Pakistani Migrant's Application

The Supreme Court has rejected a habeas corpus application filed by a Pakistani national seeking immediate release from detention ordered by the Department of Immigration.
The applicant, who illegally entered the Republic of Cyprus through the occupied territories in 2018, had submitted a series of applications for asylum and residence permits, all of which were rejected. He subsequently married a Bulgarian citizen, but his application for a residence permit was rejected due to a criminal conviction in Bulgaria and doubts about the authenticity of the marriage certificates.
In March 2025, he was arrested for illegal stay and detained. Despite his initial release with alternative measures, he violated them and was re-detained in May. The Court ruled that the detention was lawful and rejected the habeas corpus application.
The Court emphasized that there was no violation of the time limits for reviewing the detention and that its duration remains reasonable, considering the absence of travel documents and the risk of escape.
