Police: Targeted Measures for 'Deadly Speed Tracks'

The Police are implementing targeted measures to address speeding on specific roads, as stated by the Traffic Department of the Police Headquarters to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). These measures include the installation of speed cameras in high-risk areas, weekly speed enforcement campaigns, and awareness campaigns.
The statement was made in response to the recent fatal accident involving a 20-year-old on Larnakos Avenue. Municipalities, in cases of roads turning into 'speed tracks,' refer to the Police or the Technical Committee of the Traffic Problem Resolution Body for action.
The Traffic Police are intensifying their efforts to combat speeding, which remains a major cause of serious and fatal traffic accidents. Mobile cameras are also operating at over 475 locations island-wide, and regular policing campaigns are conducted.
The President of the Union of Municipalities, Andreas Vyras, stated that Municipalities do not have the jurisdiction to install speed bumps or cameras but inform the Police about problematic roads. In Larnaca, following complaints about speeding on Giannou Kranidioti Street, cameras were installed, and complaints have decreased.
