The Municipality of Athienou is monitoring the situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease and is taking preventive measures in consultation with livestock farmers, Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas told CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY.

In Athienou, there are 30 livestock units with 15,000 cows and 5,000 sheep and goats. Following the outbreak in the occupied territories, the Municipality held meetings with livestock farmers and took immediate measures, such as spraying vehicle tires at ten road points passing through livestock units.

Some projects had started earlier but were "frozen" due to the non-spread of the virus in the free areas. After the cases in Livadia and Oroklini, new meetings were held, and it was decided to close some roads, with entry and exit to livestock units only allowed from six roads where wheel disinfection tanks will be installed. Until the tanks are installed, there will be people for spraying.

In addition, livestock farmers were asked to take personal measures at their units. The scheduled event of the Municipality of Athienou for Clean Monday was canceled for preventive reasons, as the road to the picnic area passes through the livestock area. Those who visit the area will be subject to spraying and disinfection of their vehicle tires.
