Cyprus: Population in Free Areas Increased by 1.7% in 2024

The population in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus increased by 1.7% in 2024, reaching 983,000, according to the Statistical Service. In 2023, the population was 966,400.
The total fertility rate was estimated at 1.4, lower than the required 2.1 to ensure population replacement. Births decreased to 9,766 in 2024 from 10,241 in 2023.
Marriages decreased to 10,334 from 11,766, with marriages of Cyprus residents totaling 5,709. Divorces slightly decreased to 2,107 from 2,134.
Life expectancy at birth was estimated at 81.4 years for men and 85.8 years for women.
The percentage of children under 15 was 15.2%, while the percentage of elderly people over 65 was 18.3%, indicating an aging population.
Net migration was positive, estimated at 13,588.
