Power Outages in Occupied Areas: Expected to End Today
Share on:

Power outages in the occupied areas are expected to end today with the operation of the thermal power plant, according to the "chairman" of the "board of directors" of the "electricity authority", Giursel Uzun.

The "general manager" of the "authority", Dalman Aydin, stated that the restoration works will be completed tonight and from tomorrow there will be continuous power supply.

Turkish Cypriot media are relaying statements by Mr. Uzun on Dialogue TV, where he mentioned that a team from Turkey is investigating the explosion at the transformer center in Nikitas Morfou. "We have also filed a complaint with the police, who have intervened and are conducting the necessary investigation. We must examine every possibility," he said.

According to Mr. Uzun, this particular center is of strategic importance because it transfers the energy produced at the "authority's" station to the Bank of Kyrenia. He also mentioned that the "electricity authority" had received two cyberattacks before the explosion.

Mr. Uzun noted that the employees of the "authority" are constantly responding to malfunctions. He added that the recent power outages were not due to insufficient production or fuel and that $50 million in infrastructure investments have been made in the last 6-7 months.

He also criticized the leadership of the workers' union at the "electricity authority", El Sen, for political statements.
