Outdoor Work Suspension Due to Heatwave – Recommendations from the Department of Labour Inspection
The Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) of the Ministry of Labour has announced the suspension of outdoor work due to the heatwave. Employers and self-employed individuals are required to suspend heavy and moderate outdoor work between 11:00 and 17:00.
Also, the transport and delivery of goods using two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles) or personal mobility devices (scooters, e-scooters) is suspended between 12:00 and 16:00.
The measures aim to protect workers from heat stress due to high temperatures and the red alert issued by the Department of Meteorology. The warning concerns the interior of Cyprus (areas below 300 meters and more than 10 kilometers from the coast) and mountainous areas above 1150 meters.
For other cases, the DLI reminds of the obligation to measure temperature and humidity parameters, adjust work, and implement measures to avoid heat stress. It is recommended to provide cool water, use appropriate headgear and light clothing, and avoid strenuous work during the hottest hours.
In temperatures of 39°C to 46°C, work must be stopped when relative humidity levels exceed specified limits, depending on the type of work.
More information is available on the DLI website or by contacting the local District Offices by phone.
