Skip Carriers Protest for Occupational Recognition and Recycling Units

The Pancyprian Association of Licensed Skip Carriers protested outside the Presidential Palace, demanding recognition of their profession. They are also protesting the closure of a C&D waste recycling unit and attempts to create a monopoly.
Members of the Association parked approximately 30 skip trucks and submitted a memorandum to the President of the Republic. According to the President of the Association, Panikos Drousiotis, there is only one recycling unit in Nicosia, two in Limassol, and one in Paphos, which creates problems.
The Association received a phone call from the Ministry of Agriculture for a meeting on August 11. Mr. Drousiotis expressed concern about a possible financial agreement between contractors and recycling units, which would harm professionals in the sector.
In the memorandum, the Association states that the decision to close the recycling unit deprives them of the right to a free market and competition. They also demand immediate recognition of the profession, termination of monopoly efforts, and reduction of prices by recycling units.
