Lack of Teacher Interest in Optional All-Day Schools

Optional All-Day Schools are starting next Monday, an institution supported by POED. However, the President of the organization, Myria Vasiliou, expressed concern about the lack of interest from teachers to work in all-day schools.

Ms. Vasiliou noted that part-time contracts do not guarantee a decent salary, and called on the Ministry of Education to take responsibility by acknowledging the problem. She stressed that establishing full-time contracts is the only way to ensure teacher interest.

In addition, POED is concerned about the potential lack of interest from substitutes, which will lead to understaffing of school units. Ms. Vasiliou reiterated the need for immediate institutionalization of a labor framework that acts as an incentive for substitutes.

Finally, she referred to the issue of air conditioners, emphasizing that it is not enough just to install them, but the necessary procedures must be carried out for them to function, with the aim of installing and operating them in all classrooms by May 2026.
