Lack of Teacher Interest in Optional All-Day Schools in Cyprus

Optional All-Day Schools are set to begin next Monday, with POED expressing concern about the lack of teacher interest. The President of POED, Myria Vasiliou, stated in statements to ΚΥΠΕ that part-time contracts do not guarantee a decent salary.
Ms. Vasiliou emphasized the need for full-time contracts in Optional All-Day Schools (Elementary, Kindergartens, and Special Schools) in order to attract teacher interest. She also expressed concern about the lack of interest from substitutes, warning of understaffing in school units.
Regarding air conditioners, Ms. Vasiliou reiterated that their installation alone is not enough, but the necessary procedures must be carried out for them to operate, with the aim of installing and operating air conditioners in all classrooms by May 2026.
