EOKA Anniversary 1955-1959: Honoring the Struggle

April 1st marks the anniversary of the EOKA (National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters) struggle against British colonial rule from 1955-1959. Commemorative events took place across Cyprus.

In Nicosia, a celebratory doxology was held at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral, attended by political, state, and church leaders. The day's address was delivered by historian Yannis Lambrou, who spoke of the heroism of the EOKA struggle. A wreath-laying ceremony followed at the Statue of Liberty.

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized the need to pass on the history of the EOKA struggle to younger generations. The Speaker of Parliament, Annita Demetriou, called on citizens to be worthy successors to the sacrifice of the fighters.

In Limassol, the Government was represented by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, and the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides. After the doxology at the Church of St. Nicholas, a procession followed to the hideout and tomb of General Georgios Grivas Digenis.

In Paphos, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis delivered the celebratory address, highlighting the importance of justice for the Turkish invasion and occupation.

In Larnaca, the doxology was held at the Metropolitan Church of Saint Lazarus, while in the Famagusta province, a provincial parade took place in Sotira.
