A national memorial service for EOKA Deputy Leader Grigoris Afxentiou was held on Sunday at Machairas Monastery. The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, the Speaker of the House, Annita Demetriou, and other officials attended the memorial service.

Following the service, a prayer was held, and the battle of Machairas was reenacted at the hero's hideout, followed by the laying of wreaths.

Grigoris Afxentiou, also known as "Zidros", was one of the most emblematic figures of the 1955-1959 liberation struggle. On March 3, 1957, he died a martyr's death near Machairas Monastery, refusing to surrender to British forces.
