The deadly fire in mountainous Limassol was caused by two cigarettes, according to a report by the US Federal Agency ATF. The report was released following instructions from the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides.

The investigation showed that the fire started from a hotspot measuring 1x3 meters and spread rapidly, reaching 1.5 hectares in just 17 minutes. The topography of the area and strong winds contributed to the rapid spread, at a rate of 60-63 meters per minute.

At the point of ignition, on the edge of the Malia - Arsos road, cigarette butts were found, two of which showed thermal alterations. The cause was attributed to careless disposal of a cigarette that came into contact with dry vegetation.

The ATF report, as well as the reports of the competent services of the Republic of Cyprus, will be used to strengthen Civil Protection and crisis management.
