Yeri: Complaints of Abandoned Dead Animals After Culling
Share on:

Farmers in the Yeri area have complained that hundreds of dead animals were found abandoned for 24 hours after culling operations took place on a farm. The farmers claim that biosecurity measures were not observed by the responsible authorities.

Farmer Christodoulos Christodoulou stated that the animals were executed and left there without being buried, while Alekos Alexandrou reported that he was unable to feed his rabbits due to the situation. He also complained that protective suits were thrown on the ground.

For their part, the veterinary services, through senior veterinary officer Apostolos Mazeris, defended the actions of the veterinarians, arguing that they are implementing the protocols. Mr. Mazeris stated that there were difficulties and a hostile climate, which caused insecurity among the staff.

The government has created a website (www.footandmouth.gov.cy) to inform citizens about support measures and foot-and-mouth disease.
