Kailas: Inconceivable that the countryside burns so easily in 2025

The President of the Panagrotikos Union of Cyprus, Kyriakos Kailas, issued a statement regarding the recent devastating fires in the Cypriot countryside, emphasizing the need for immediate action and strengthening protection measures.

Mr. Kailas referred to the abandonment of rural areas, the accumulation of dry materials, inadequate cleanings, and illegal landfills as dangerous sources of fire.

He also expressed his grief over the loss of two people in the flames, stressing the State's responsibility to stand by those affected.

Mr. Kailas acknowledged the efforts of state services, fire services, civil defense, and volunteer groups, while also emphasizing the need for further strengthening in the prevention and protection of the countryside.

He placed particular emphasis on the need to investigate possible arson or criminal negligence and called for strict accountability.

Mr. Kailas appealed to the State to strengthen infrastructure, immediately record damages and provide quick compensation, as well as to the competent authorities to investigate the causes and assign responsibilities. He also called on the agricultural world to remain united and active.

"It is now inconceivable that in 2025 the countryside will burn so easily," Mr. Kailas concluded.
