Veterinary Services: Beef Consumption Safe in Cyprus

The Veterinary Services assure that there is no health risk from consuming beef in Cyprus. This is based on the classification of Cyprus by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) as a country with a negligible risk for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).
The announcement comes in response to a publication in the Turkish Cypriot press regarding the death of a Turkish Cypriot diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The Veterinary Services emphasize that BSE has never occurred in Cyprus.
The checks and surveillance carried out in accordance with EU legislation confirm that Cyprus is free from the disease. Cyprus's classification by WOAH, combined with the measures taken, guarantees the safety of beef consumption.
