Veterinary Services: No risk from beef consumption in Cyprus

The Veterinary Services assure that there is no health risk to consumers from beef consumption in Cyprus. According to their announcement, Cyprus has been classified by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) in the group of countries with a Negligible Risk for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).
The Veterinary Services issued the announcement following a publication in the Turkish Cypriot press regarding the death of a Turkish Cypriot, who was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The Services emphasize that BSE has never occurred in Cyprus and that control and surveillance programs ensure the absence of the disease.
Cyprus' classification as a country with a negligible risk for BSE, combined with the measures taken, ensures the safety of beef consumption.
