Cyprus: New Evacuations Due to Fire – EU Assistance

A large fire is in progress in the Limassol area of Cyprus, with authorities proceeding with new evacuations. The most serious front is located in the area of Omodos village, whose residents have been asked to evacuate the community as a precaution.
Two Chinook helicopters departed from Egypt for Cyprus, while 26 Greek firefighters departed from Elefsina. The EU has mobilized two Canadair aircraft from Spain, responding to the request of the Cypriot authorities for assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
According to the community leader of Omodos, Evgenios Michael, the situation is difficult, with a winery at the entrance of the village being at risk. Extinguishing efforts continue by ground and air forces, despite strong winds.
Concern is caused by an elderly couple in the Omodos area who refuse to leave their home.
