Cyprus: Thousands May Have Hepatitis Undiagnosed, 'Prometheus' Estimates

Thousands of citizens in Cyprus are estimated to be living with hepatitis without knowing it, according to the Liver Patients Association of Cyprus 'Prometheus'. In a statement marking World Hepatitis Day, the association emphasizes that early diagnosis saves lives and prevents serious complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
'Prometheus' points out that vaccination against hepatitis B, included in the National Vaccination Program, is the only effective means of prevention. With the slogan of this year's World Health Organization campaign 'Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down', the association calls for action to eliminate barriers hindering prevention and treatment.
Citing World Health Organization data, the association reports that in 2022, 1.3 million people died from chronic hepatitis B and C, while 304 million were living with these diseases. Only 45% of newborns received the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth.
'Prometheus' stresses that modern treatments with antiviral drugs are effective against hepatitis B, while hepatitis C is now curable. It calls on the State to intensify efforts for the National Strategy for the elimination of hepatitis and citizens to get tested.
