Limassol: Lifeguard Shortage on Beaches β Major Problem

Limassol beaches are facing a severe lifeguard shortage, with only 43 of the 79 approved positions filled, according to statements by the Deputy District Officer of Limassol, Hlektra Panagiotou, to CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY.
Only 16 of the 26 lifeguard towers are operational. Ms. Panagiotou expressed concern about the understaffing, despite the reduction in required lifeguard medals from 4 to 3.
A particular problem is noted at Governor's Beach, where no lifeguard tower is operational. While an examination of candidates was scheduled, no one showed up. However, three people have expressed interest.
The British Bases have requested the staffing of the second tower at Ladies Mile, as only one is operating for 5 kilometers of coastline.
Ms. Panagiotou attributed the lack of interest to Brexit, a preference for working in hotel pools, and the regulations of the Cyprus Lifesaving Federation.
The District Administration is also facing difficulties in staffing towers for early morning swimmers, especially at Akti Olympion and Kourion beach.
