Limassol Lifeguard Shortage: Only 16 of 26 Towers Operational

The Limassol District is facing a significant lifeguard shortage, resulting in only 16 of the 26 lifeguard towers being operational. According to statements by the Deputy District Officer of Limassol, Hlektra Panagiotou, to ΚΥΠΕ, only 43 of the 79 approved positions have been filled.
Ms. Panagiotou stated that despite the reduction in the required lifeguard medals, the response remains low. She pointed out that there is a particular problem at Governor's Beach, where no lifeguard tower is operating.
The British Bases have requested the staffing of the second tower at Ladies Mile. The lack of interest is attributed, among other things, to Brexit and the preference for working in hotel pools.
The District Administration is also facing difficulties in staffing towers for early morning swimmers, as there is no possibility of operating from 6:30 AM at Akti Olympion and Kourion beach.
