The new Trauma Center in Cyprus has drastically reduced the treatment time for trauma patients, from 200 minutes to just 10, according to Dr. Athos Georgiou, Director of the Center. This is achieved through the immediate collaboration of medical specialties and the 24-hour presence of a trauma surgeon.

Until 2022, trauma management was fragmented, despite the World Health Organization's recommendations since 1995. The Level 1 Trauma Center, which operates as a tertiary unit, has published six to seven research papers within two years.

In the past, injured patients remained in First Aid for up to 200 minutes. Today, the trauma team is activated immediately via a special application, reducing the waiting time to 10 minutes. More than 150 multi-trauma patients are treated annually at the Nicosia General Hospital.

Dr. Georgiou emphasized the need to create more trauma centers and evaluate hospitals based on scientific criteria. He also stressed the importance of recording incidents, as 1,300 to 1,500 cases are recorded annually at the Nicosia General Hospital alone.

In closing, he appealed for caution when driving, especially during the holidays, and to avoid alcohol or substance use.
