The Road Transport Department (RTD) is warning about dangerous replacement airbags of Chinese origin. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent warning regarding their use.

According to the NHTSA, ten accidents in the U.S. have resulted in deaths or serious injuries due to the rupture of airbags manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN).

These airbags, used as replacements after accidents, may fail in the event of a collision, ejecting metal fragments and causing death or serious injury.

The RTD calls on importers and sellers in Cyprus to inform the Department if they have such products and to recall them. Consumers who own these spare parts are urged to contact their mechanic/panel beater/seller.

In case of refusal to respond, consumers can submit a complaint to the Consumer Protection Service via the website www.consumer.gov.cy.

The Road Transport Department will inform the Department of Electromechanical Services, POVEK and the Consumer Protection Service. It is monitoring developments and will make further announcements.

So far, there is no indication of the existence of these airbags in Cyprus.

For information, consumers can contact the Road Transport Department at 22600500 or at [email protected]
