Thousands of citizens in Cyprus are estimated to be living with hepatitis without knowing it, according to the Cyprus Liver Patients Association “Prometheus”. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data for 2022, 1.3 million deaths were recorded from chronic hepatitis B and C.

In a statement, the Association emphasizes that early diagnosis saves lives and prevents serious complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis B vaccination, included in the National Vaccination Program, is the only effective means of prevention.

Under the slogan of this year's WHO campaign “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down”, “Prometheus” calls for action to eliminate the economic and social barriers hindering prevention and treatment.

The Association reports that in 2022, 304 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B and C, while only 45% of newborns received the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth. Modern treatments effectively combat hepatitis B, and hepatitis C is now curable.

“Prometheus” calls on the State to intensify efforts for the National Hepatitis Elimination Strategy and urges every citizen to get tested.
