Fire in Omodos, Cyprus: Under Control During Minister's Meeting

A fire that broke out west of the Omodos community was brought under control on Friday afternoon. According to the President of the Omodos Community Council, Evgenios Michael, the fire was noticed while a meeting was in progress in the area with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou.
The fire was located on the road between the Potamiou and Omodos communities. Mr. Michael stated that the area is outside the village, but there are some residences. Traffic on the Pachna – Omodos road, which had been temporarily closed, has been restored.
According to the Police, the Omodos – Pachna road was reopened to traffic shortly before 17:00. The Press Representative of the Fire Service, Andreas Kettis, stated that the fire burned approximately one hectare of dry grass and wild vegetation, while the yards of three houses were slightly affected. Firefighting forces remain on standby.
Mr. Kettis appealed to the public to avoid flying unmanned aircraft during firefighting operations, due to a serious flight safety issue.
