Limassol Fires: Restoration and Responsibility
Share on:

Following the devastating fires in the Limassol district, there is a need for evaluation, self-criticism, and the creation of conditions to prevent similar situations in the future, according to the General Secretary of SEK.

The fires demonstrated the region's vulnerability and the urgent need for a transition to green development due to the climate crisis. Along with gratitude to the professionals who helped extinguish the fires, there is an obligation for an "apology" to the families of the victims, as well as a commitment to restore the damage and compensate those affected.

It is important to restore public confidence in the protection system. A re-evaluation of errors at the political and operational level is required. Risks from winter rainfall due to tree loss must be anticipated and prevented.

The following are proposed: redesigning the action plan with the utilization of the District Self-Government Organizations and local authorities, assessing the adequacy of civil defense, claiming and utilizing European resources, strengthening frontline services (firefighters and forest firefighters), connecting all security services, and strengthening aircraft.

The fires must be treated as a reminder of climate change. The state and government must act immediately, with respect for citizens and the environment.
