Six Desalination Units Operational in Moni - Two More on Trial Run

Six of the 13 mobile desalination units in Moni have been put into operation, with the aim of having all of them operational by the end of the week, according to the Deputy Director of the Water Development Department, Giorgos Kazantzis.

The activation is delayed due to technical problems being addressed by the manufacturing company from the United Arab Emirates.

Six units are in permanent operation, while two are on a trial run. Technicians are facing problems with automation and other technical issues.

Each unit produces approximately 1,000 cubic meters of water per day, which is channeled into the southern pipeline for the needs of the Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta districts. The use of desalinated water will save water from the Kouris dam for Limassol.

In Paphos, the first desalination unit is working on a trial basis, while the other will start on Monday. The larger units are expected to operate in September.

Regarding the water supply to the fire-stricken areas of mountainous Limassol, the Water Development Department is helping to address the problems, despite the fact that the areas do not fall under its jurisdiction.

Giorgos Kazantzis is leaving his position and Elena Foinikaridou is taking over.

Additionally, the temporary desalination unit in Potima, with a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters of water per day, is in the final testing stage. A mobile desalination unit with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters of water is expected to operate in September.

Within the next few weeks, the desalination unit between Kouklia-Mandria, with a capacity of 15,000 cubic meters of water per day, which was destroyed by fire, is expected to reopen.
