2.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Occupied Trikomo – Concerns about Building Safety

An earthquake of 2.7 magnitude occurred at 20:19 on Wednesday in the area of occupied Trikomo, according to the AFAD (Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency). The Kıbrıs Postası website reports that the focal depth was 56.64 kilometers.
Onur Olguner, president of the Turkish Cypriot architects' chamber, expressed concern that the earthquake, although small, struck the most densely populated area in the occupied territories.
Mr. Olguner stressed the need for strict controls on new buildings and the full implementation of relevant inspections. He also called for the immediate implementation of the 'law' on upgrading buildings, especially those built before 1999, as well as the rapid renovation of 'public buildings'.
