Souni Fire: A Near Repeat of Mati in Cyprus

Souni suffered extensive damage from the fire on July 23rd, with 122 homes completely destroyed. Residents describe a situation where they felt abandoned, without timely evacuation notification.
According to the testimony of Sylvia Constantinidou, there was no evacuation notification, no sirens, no police, or fire trucks. Residents were forced to evacuate on their own, resulting in traffic congestion on the only escape route.
Residents also denounce the local authorities for negligence in cleaning the plots, despite warnings issued 20 days before the fire. The fire department responded that the responsibility for cleaning lies with the community council.
