Forest Department Issues Wildfire Prevention Recommendations Ahead of August 15th

The Department of Forests is issuing strict recommendations to the public ahead of the August 15th holiday, calling for respect for nature and avoidance of actions that could cause a fire.
In a statement, the Department of Forests emphasizes that the recent example of the devastating fire in mountainous Lemesos should concern everyone. Close cooperation with the staff of the Department of Forests and the Police is required.
Lighting fires is strictly prohibited in forest and agricultural areas. According to the Forest Law, this act is punishable by imprisonment for up to 12 years or a fine of up to €100,000, or both.
A special appeal is made to holiday home owners to be especially careful if they light charcoal for cooking, using specially designed areas and ensuring that the fire is completely extinguished after cooking.
Also, professionals and amateurs are urged to avoid using cutting or welding tools near dry vegetation.
The Department of Forests appeals to holiday home owners to prevent workers from burning weeds when cleaning yards.
It is reminded that the disposal of lit cigarette butts in forest and agricultural areas is prohibited. Lighting fires is only allowed in picnic areas and only within specially designed areas.
If anyone notices smoke or fire, call the toll-free line 1407 (Department of Forests) or 112 (Fire Service) immediately.
