Cyprus Environment Department Issues 137 Fines for Environmental Violations

The Department of Environment announced that from February to August 2025, 137 out-of-court settlements totaling ā¬325,000 were issued for environmental violations. In comparison, 85 fines totaling ā¬100,000 were issued in 2023.
According to the announcement, it is expected that by the end of 2025, the out-of-court settlements and the total amount will exceed three times that of previous years. This demonstrates progress in strengthening environmental controls.
Since February 2025, the Nikos Christodoulides government established the Inspection Branch, staffed with 13 inspectors. Since then, multiple out-of-court settlements have been issued, and reports have been submitted to the Legal Service for the prosecution of cases of non-compliance with environmental legislation.
The Department has also institutionalized collaborations with the Police and the Fire Department, strengthened the involvement of local authorities in inspections, and uses new technologies for environmental controls and monitoring.
Inspectors conduct on-site inspections and audits of public and private projects, taking enforcement measures when violations are detected. The goal is the effective protection of the environment.
