A 20-year-old, Kyriakos Antoniou, lost his life in a traffic accident on Larnakos Avenue in Aglantzia in the early hours of Tuesday (29/07). The accident occurred when the car driven by Antoniou collided with another vehicle.

Two young people were in the other vehicle, who received first aid at Nicosia General Hospital and were discharged. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the Traffic Police.

Prior to the tragic incident, both the Municipality of Nicosia and the Municipality of Aglantzia had warned the Traffic Police and the Police about the organization of informal speed contests ("races") in the area. The Deputy Mayor of Aglantzia, Andreas Constantinou, had referred to repeated remarks to the competent authorities and continuous calls from residents.

OmegaLive possesses letters, the most recent dated May 26, 2025, proving the warnings to the Authorities about the problem. Despite the warnings, Mr. Constantinou stated that "unfortunately, we were not heard."

The Deputy Mayor of Aglantzia requested an investigation into how many accidents the driver of the other vehicle was involved in. It was also emphasized that the problem had been highlighted through articles in the press. An officer of the Traffic Police Headquarters had assured that the road is not characterized as high risk. The letters to the authorities remained unanswered.

The website secured the last letter signed by a Traffic Police Sergeant of the Municipality of Nicosia, dated May 26, 2025, and a letter from the Student Union of the University of Cyprus to the Chief of Police.
