Chikungunya: Risk of Virus Outbreak in Cyprus

Epidemiologist Dr. Michalis Voniatis expressed concerns about the potential outbreak of the Chikungunya virus in Cyprus. The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, has spread in Europe, with cases in France and Italy.
The virus is mainly transmitted by the mosquito species Aedes aegypti, which already exists in Cyprus. If an infected person is bitten by a mosquito in Cyprus, local transmission may begin.
Symptoms include high fever and severe joint pain, which can last for months or years. There is no specific treatment, and vaccines have serious side effects. The virus is not transmitted from person to person, but through mosquito bites.
Infants, the elderly, and people with underlying diseases are vulnerable. Dr. Voniatis stressed the need to combat mosquitoes and protect against bites.
Regarding COVID-19, he noted an increase in cases due to new Omicron variants, but with no cause for concern at present.
