Vafeadis: Committee to study Takata report established

The Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, announced the establishment of a special committee by the Road Safety Council to study the report on Takata airbags.
The committee, consisting of the directors of the Departments of Electromechanical Services and Road Transport, as well as a representative of the Police, will analyze the findings and submit recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Mr. Vafeadis clarified that the management of the Takata airbag issue remains the responsibility of the Road Transport Department. The new committee will focus on a broader assessment of road safety issues.
The committee's actions include the creation of information-sharing mechanisms, the development of a risk assessment methodology, and the evaluation of good practices. It will also suggest ways to modernize the vehicle approval process and regulate the profession of importers.
The Minister defended the selection of the committee members, emphasizing that the final decisions will be taken by the Road Safety Council. The Ministry has initiated internal procedures to strengthen oversight and transparency. The committee will meet immediately, while any potential liabilities are being investigated by the Legal Service and the Police.
Responding to criticism of delays regarding the deaths of Kyriakos Oxinos and Styliani Giorgalli, the Minister defended the Ministry's actions and the completeness of the report.
