Transport Ministry: Measures to Reorganize TOM After TAKATA Report

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works has announced measures to reorganize the Department of Road Transport (TOM) following the completion of the first reading of the Research Committee's Report on the disposal of vehicles in the Cypriot market and vehicle recalls. The report was released on July 15, 2025.
The Research Committee highlighted responsibilities and problems, with the Ministry acknowledging the criticality of the findings. The Director-General of the Ministry has been asked to proceed immediately with the reorganization of TOM. The possibility of technical support from the EU through DG Reform is also being explored.
An audit by the Internal Audit Service of the Republic has been agreed, while TOM and the Electromechanical Service are implementing new procedures. The aim is to create a Vehicle Technical Directorate to strengthen the state's technical capabilities.
The Ministry calls on citizens to cooperate with the Authorities and respond immediately to vehicle recall notices, recalling a recent accident in which the owner had been notified three times without responding. Citizens are advised not to drive cars with airbag recalls until they are replaced.
The Ministry expresses respect and sympathy to the families of the victims and recognizes the need for actions that will ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
